We did, literally, get caught up in the perfect snowstorm (couldn't have been more gorgeous!). All the elements also came together for the figurative perfect storm (sickness+travel+weather+cabin fever).
Both the girls were getting sick on the drive up to Tahoe; out of control whining! Greg was announcing that we're on the wrong discipline track but I had a pretty good suspicion that sickies were around the corner. Of course, I was doubting our discipline techniques simultaneously 'cause, man, it was bad! Luckily for our parenting skills, it turned out to be good girls that got beaten up by germs.
The big...and let's face it...ONLY...good thing about the drive up was when the girls realized there was snow on the ground. Actually, it was Ruby that saw it first. I was talking to Greg and Ruby kept saying "what's that, Mommy? what's that?" and I kept saying, "one minute, one minute, i'm talking to daddy." Finally, I turned around to see Ruby pointing out the window asking if the white stuff was snow. It was an exciting moment! ;-)
So, let's see...we had a really hard ride up and then the next couple of days the kids were sick and then I was feeling sick for an afternoon/evening. After that, we spent the rest of the week trying to make the best of the storm. It really was spectacular -- non stop gorgeous, huge snowflakes! Although it canceled most of the activities we planned -- ice skating, dog sledding, horse sleds, building snowman, snow angels, etc. - it was still exciting to be away from home and getting to just "hang out."
We did get to rent some sleds and go down the hill with the girls. Zoe enjoyed it but Ruby had a hard time. If it wasn't snowing and very windy, I think the sledding and any other activities would have been great but Ruby was really not digging the wind hitting those cute cheeks! Zoe really did well with the weather!
Our attempt to build a snowman turned into a little tiny baby snowman because Rubes was freaking out. Although our vacation didn't turn out to be exactly what we expected it was fantastic for us to all have a week of really great family time and we kept busy enough with indoor activities. Here's a glimpse at what filled our days:
- Lots of time bundling up to get outside
- Daytime swimming & hot-tubing in the snowstorm
- Building mini snowman
- Game arcade
- Taking the shuttle to the Village where we visited the kids ski school, Starbucks and a place where Ruby and Zoe made their own homemade candles (this was a favorite!)
- Roasted smores one night inside the lodge fireplace and one night at the outdoor firepit
- Candyland, Dr. Seus board games and the like
- The girls played TONS with their babies, prizes, stuffed animals, etc.
- Nighttime swimming & hot-tubing in the snowstorm
- Snuggying
- Working-out
- Walking
- Riding the elevators (guess which girls always wanted to press the buttons?!)
- Taking the stairs (Zoe was very into being Ms. Independent. When we were in the lodge, she wanted us to take the elevator while she would take the stairs down to the restaurant!)
- Checking out the shops!
The day before we left, Greg and I escaped for some ski time. We put the girls in a kids program at the resort and they LOVED it...arts 'n crafts all day...heaven on earth! ;-) Skiing with Greg was nothing short of therapeutic! It took me a little while (it's been more than 15 years!) but I got my ski legs back...more or less. Greg did really well although the first 10 minutes were hilarious. Greg fell and couldn't get himself back up. Needless to say, I couldn't stop laughing... He survived...as did I! And, then...we had our fill!!!! We were cold and exhausted and ready to get back to the fireplace.
